About Friends of Caroline Fry
My name is Caroline. I was born with the condition achondroplasia which is a common form of dwarfism. Despite this, it hasn't stopped me from living my life.
More recently, I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Again this hasn't stopped me from living life. I now use a mobility scooter as my walking has deteriorated.
I used to drive a wheelchair accessible vehicle up until last year. It was 20 years old and sadly it had come to the end of its life. So I had to say good bye to it. I absolutely loved driving it as I was independent and it was adapted with hand controls, electric ramp and tail gate and buttons to press which operated the automatic transmission. The car was perfect for me. It was my postman pat van!
I really miss having a car to drive which is adapted to meet my needs. At the moment, I have the help of my friends, or if I am stuck I use a taxi, to take me grocery shopping, to appointments, physiotherapy and to collect my son from school if he is in need. I don't like to rely on other people as this isn't what I am used to; I have always been independent. My father also uses a mobility scooter and I would be able take him to appointments as well. I have a brother who is unable to drive as he has cerebral palsy so having a car would benefit all my family.
I have been looking for a suitable vehicle for me and recently I found one which meets my needs like my old one (see pictures). So far £10,000 has been raised towards the vehicle. To complete the purchase, I need to raise an additional £5,590.
This vehicle will be life changing. It will give me my independence back and I will be able to go shopping where and when I like, attend appointments without relying on taxis, family or friends, meet up with friends around the island, collect my child from School if necessary and just have freedom!
To make my dream come true, I need a little bit of help with raising the balance so that I can be an independent, productive individual.
